I have posted several of my thoughts on how different the church world and work environment are from the corporate world ( see
Part 1,
Part 2,
Part 3). Well I've been in my new role at the church for about 8 months and I'm starting to identify another one. "People within the church are not always healthy (mentally, emotionally, and spiritually)".
You might be thinking, duh Mike, of course they are not. That can be said for all people. However, my point is this. In the church, and especially at NewPointe, we promote a "family" atmosphere because as Christians we are indeed the family of God.
So what happens in family situations? People are free to act out on their hurts, feelings, emotions, etc. I know in my family I will say and do things that I would never dream of doing at work, at school, or in other social settings. I have unconditional love and acceptance in my family. So it is in the church family. I am seeing that there is a lot of hurt and pain that can come spewing out of people in many different formats.
As a staff person, you get hit with this stuff and it can be discouraging, demoralizing, and depressing. In the corporate world, people keep this stuff to themselves because it isn't safe to share it with strangers.
So I've been thinking a lot about this scenario (I like to think about things!). Here is my latest revelation about this "Whacky Church World". Disappointment and discouragement result from missing expectations. If I come to work every day thinking everyone in our church is happy and healthy, then I'm really going to be disappointed when an arrow of someone's hurt and misery gets shot in my direction, or a grenade of childhood abuse and dysfunction explodes in my lap.
Think of it this way. What if the doctors and nurses in the hospital said, "Oh I can't believe another sick person showed up today," or "I'm so tired of people with weak hearts needing surgery," or "If one more sick person comes through those doors I'm out of here!"
They don't say these things because their expectation is that they are there to help sick people.
My
expectation needs to be that there will always be unhealthy people in our church family who do not always act in the right way. Therefore, my
attitude can be one of help and encouragement!God has given us his unending love, support, and strength. Satan tries to dismantle us with fear, doubt, deception, and discouragement! The battle is already won. We just need to stay focused on Jesus the victor! Thanks for letting me share this with you! :)
